Tool 3 • Screening Checkpoint

Military Height & Weight Screener

The height-and-weight screening chart is still the first checkpoint every recruit and soldier passes through. If you exceed the screening weight for your height, you move to WHtR or tape test. This tool tells you exactly where you stand and what happens next.

Tool 4 • Aerobic Fitness Estimator

Military VO2 Max Estimator

Estimates your VO2 max (aerobic capacity) from your 2-mile run time — the same run already in the Army AFT and Navy PRT. VO2 max predicts cardiovascular health, performance under load, and longevity. Includes military fitness classification by branch and age.

What Changed in 2026: DoD Body Composition Overhaul

On January 1, 2026, the Department of Defense replaced traditional height-and-weight tables with Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) as the primary body composition screening method across all five U.S. military branches. The change was directed by a December 18, 2025 memorandum titled “Additional Guidance on Military Fitness Standards.”

The universal DoD standard is a WHtR of less than 0.55. To calculate it, simply divide your waist circumference (in inches) by your height (in inches). A 5’10” person (70 inches) must keep their waist under 38.5 inches. For the Marine Corps, the standard is stricter — under 0.52 per MARADMIN 066/26, meaning that same 70-inch person needs a waist under 36.4 inches.

Key change: Service members now undergo body composition assessments twice per year, not once. Failing WHtR does not mean automatic failure — you proceed to a body fat percentage calculation as a second step.

Army Body Fat Tape Test: How the Formula Works

When an Army soldier exceeds the WHtR 0.55 screening, they move to the one-site abdominal circumference tape test under Army Directive 2023-11. This replaced the old multi-site tape test that measured neck, waist, and hips for men.

The Army formula for males is: BF% = (86.010 × log10(waist − neck)) − (70.041 × log10(height)) + 36.76. For females: BF% = (163.205 × log10(waist + hip − neck)) − (97.684 × log10(height)) − 78.387. All measurements in inches.

A soldier who fails the tape test can request a supplemental body fat assessment using DXA scanning, the InBody 770 bioelectrical impedance device, or the Bod Pod. Passing any supplemental test overrides a failed tape result. Soldiers scoring 465 or higher on the AFT with at least 80 points in every event are exempt from body fat screening entirely.

Navy Body Composition Assessment (BCA) 2026

The Navy updated its Physical Readiness Program guidance in December 2025 under OPNAVINST 6110.1L. The new BCA is a two-step process: Step 1 is the sex-neutral WHtR screen (≤ 0.5499). Step 2 is a body fat percentage calculation for anyone over 0.55.

The Navy also added an absolute waist ceiling: men must be under 39 inches and women under 35.5 inches regardless of height. Maximum body fat is 26% for males and 36% for females. The Navy body fat estimate uses waist, height, and weight measurements.

Marine Corps Standards: Strictest in the DoD

The Marine Corps set a stricter WHtR standard of < 0.52 under MARADMIN 066/26. Marines who exceed 0.52 proceed to body fat testing using the multi-site tape method or BIA (bioelectrical impedance analysis). Maximum allowable body fat is 18% for males and 26% for females — the tightest limits in the DoD.

MARADMIN 066/26 also moved the Marine Corps to a sex-neutral PFT standard for combat arms MOSs, requiring all Marines in those roles to meet the male scoring standard regardless of sex beginning January 1, 2026.

Understanding VO2 Max and Military Fitness

VO2 max measures how much oxygen your body can use during maximum effort exercise. It is expressed in milliliters of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (ml/kg/min). Higher is better. The Cooper 12-minute run test — developed by Dr. Kenneth Cooper for the U.S. Air Force in 1968 — is one of the most reliable field estimates and is still used by military and law enforcement agencies worldwide.

For a 2-mile run, you can estimate VO2 max using validated military formulas. A soldier running 14:30 has an estimated VO2 max of about 50 ml/kg/min. Running 16:00 puts you around 44 ml/kg/min. Elite special operations candidates typically need 55+. VO2 max naturally declines about 1% per year after age 25, so the earlier you build it, the longer you retain it.

Amazon: A simple tape measure is all you need for WHtR and tape test assessments. Find body measurement tape measures on Amazon — look for a non-stretchable fiberglass tape, which is what military regulations specify.

Back to the PT Calculator

Body composition is only half the picture. Your actual test scores — deadlifts, push-ups, sprint-drag-carry, plank, and 2-mile run — determine your Army AFT category. Use the main Military PT Calculator to check your scores across all 5 branches side by side with 2026 official standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 2026 military waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) standard?
As of January 1, 2026, the DoD replaced height-and-weight tables with WHtR as the primary body composition screen for all 5 branches. The universal standard is a WHtR under 0.55 (waist circumference divided by height). The Marine Corps uses a stricter 0.52 standard per MARADMIN 066/26.
How is Army body fat percentage calculated in 2026?
The Army uses a one-site tape test measuring abdominal circumference at the belly button, along with body weight, per Army Directive 2023-11. This replaced the old multi-site neck/waist/hip method. Soldiers who fail the WHtR screen proceed to the tape test as a second step.
What are the maximum body fat percentages for each military branch?
DoD sets a floor: males may not be required below 18% and females below 26%. Army maximums range 20–26% for males and 30–36% for females depending on age. Marine Corps standards are the strictest. Branch-specific maximums are available in the body fat calculator above.
Can a high AFT score exempt me from the body fat test?
Yes. Under Army Directive 2025-17, soldiers who score 465 or higher on the AFT with a minimum of 80 points on every individual event are exempt from body fat screening for that testing cycle. No alternative events are permitted for this exemption. The exemption expires at your next record test.
What is a good VO2 max for military service?
For military service, men should target a VO2 max of 45+ ml/kg/min and women 38+ ml/kg/min to be competitive on fitness tests. Elite combat units typically require 50+ for males. VO2 max can be estimated from your 2-mile run time using the calculator above.
