How the PRT is scored
Three events, each scored separately against a table for your age band and sex, and each producing a performance level. Those levels are averaged into an overall Performance Mark Average, which is what becomes your category.
- Push-ups — two minutes, on the deck, elbows to roughly 90 degrees.
- Forearm plank — replaced curl-ups. Held to failure, scored on time.
- Cardio — the 1.5-mile run, or an approved alternate: the 2,000-metre row, the 500-yard swim or the 450-metre swim.
Minimums by age and sex
These are the Probationary figures — the least a sailor can do on each event and still record a passing score. Falling short of any one of them is a PRT failure regardless of how strong the other two events are.
| Age | Push-ups (M) | Plank (M) | Run (M) | Push-ups (F) | Plank (F) | Run (F) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 17–19 | 42 | 1:11 | 12:45 | 19 | 1:01 | 15:00 |
| 20–24 | 37 | 1:10 | 13:30 | 16 | 1:00 | 15:30 |
| 25–29 | 34 | 1:09 | 14:00 | 13 | 0:59 | 16:08 |
| 30–34 | 31 | 1:07 | 14:30 | 11 | 0:58 | 16:45 |
| 35–39 | 27 | 1:06 | 15:00 | 9 | 0:56 | 17:00 |
| 40–44 | 24 | 1:05 | 15:30 | 7 | 0:55 | 17:15 |
| 45–49 | 21 | 1:03 | 16:08 | 5 | 0:54 | 17:23 |
| 50–54 | 19 | 1:02 | 16:45 | 2 | 0:53 | 17:30 |
| 55–59 | 10 | 1:01 | 17:09 | 2 | 0:52 | 18:34 |
| 60–64 | 8 | 1:00 | 18:52 | 2 | 0:51 | 19:43 |
The forearm plank is the event sailors most often under-train, because it replaced curl-ups and the old muscle memory does not transfer. It is held to failure and scored on time, so there is no ceiling to coast to — every second is points.
Cardio alternates — row and swim
The 1.5-mile run is the default. Where a command authorises an alternate, or a medical waiver requires one, the row and the swim are scored on their own tables — they are not conversions of a run time.
| Age | Run (M) | 2,000 m row (M) | 500 yd swim (M) | Run (F) | 2,000 m row (F) | 500 yd swim (F) |

The 450-metre swim is also authorised and carries its own table; the calculator scores it.
Body composition
The PRT is only half of the Physical Fitness Assessment. The other half is the Body Composition Assessment, and it comes first: a sailor who fails the BCA has failed the PFA whatever the PRT score says.
The BCA screens on height and weight, and where that is exceeded, on the circumference method. Full detail, including the Navy's tables and how the tape measurement is taken, is on the height, weight and body fat page.
Common questions
What is the minimum passing score on the Navy PRT?
There is no single number. Each of the three events is scored against your age band and sex, and the lowest passing level on each is Probationary. Fall below the Probationary figure on any one event and the PRT is a failure, even if the other two are strong.

What are the events on the Navy PRT?
Push-ups, the forearm plank and one cardio event — the 1.5-mile run, the 2,000-metre row, the 500-yard swim or the 450-metre swim. The forearm plank replaced curl-ups.

How often do sailors take the PRT?
The Physical Fitness Assessment is conducted twice a year. The Body Composition Assessment is taken first, and a BCA failure fails the whole PFA regardless of PRT performance.

Does the Navy PRT use different standards for men and women?
Yes. Every event is scored against separate male and female tables, and both are further split by age band from 17–19 through 60–64.
